Black Audio Society [Live] is a real-world iteration of gum.mp3’s internet radio program at Dublab, meant to steward the conservation and appreciation of black music. The aim is to identify sociopolitical context, analyze the development and syncretism of genres over time, and imagine the future of black cultural product in both theory and practice. Through this residency at The Pocket, guest visits, mutual aid activities, and interactive deep dives into black music and social organization provides as an alternative destination for music and community engagement.

gum.mp3 is from rural North Carolina, and is a current Baltimore resident. He fuses regional flavors of dance music with elements of funk and jazz to assess different chunks of black music history and genealogy under a futurist agenda. Or, as Bandcamp said so well, “[he’s] a self-described noise machine, digital pirate, and technomancer—embodies the spirit of Akomfrah’s Data Thief in both his music and his persona, acting as a connector for different elements of Black dance music history.
